sorry about that being blank. k im trying to a system restore and when it starts up and says dell i push ctrl f11 and then it doesnt do anything it goes to the boot paths where i have to choose one. they both work so i choose the one what i ussually go to. im not sure if its cuz there is 2 of them. how do i delete the one i dont want? and how do i make the system restore thing work? thanks alot
If you have two boot paths shown, you must have reintalled XP which modified your Master Boot Record and disabled PC Restore. You should be able to revive PC Restore using the procedure
here.
If one of the boot paths did not work, you could remove it by going to Start|Run, entering
msconfig and clicking OK. On the BOOT.INI tab click the "Check all boot paths" button. One path will be identified as not valid and you will be able to delete it at that time. However, since they both work it appears that you have two installations of XP on your system so you could delete one of them by editing the boot.ini file as described
here. (Doing a proper reinstallation of XP would be preferable, however.)
k i was confused on a couple things. to revive the system restore i dont know how to boot in dos mode. and to delete a boot path it says "at the command prompt" and i have no idea what command promt they are talking about. help please! thanks
To boot to a DOS prompt you need a boot floppy. You can download the files for one from
here. The command prompt referred to in the other document is what is displayed when you go to Start|Run, enter
cmd and click OK. It will be of the form
C:\Documents and Settings\Your account>.
ok i must be stupid. dont have a floppy disk so i cant boot in dos. so i cant do the pc restore revive correct? and while trying to delete a boot path i clicked start/run and typed cmd then at the command prompt i typed in bootcfg/? and then it says its not recognized as a internal or external command please help. im so lost
Try the procedure
here for creating a bootable DOS CD-ROM.
Bootcfg is not recognized by Windows XP Home Edition, so if you are running that edition use the manual editing instructions for modifying boot.ini by going to Start|Control Panel|System|Advanced Tab|Startup and Recovery.
