I recently installed a older version of the Nvidia driver( version 77.77 ) since the newest one had some bugs in it. However, when I'm working on the computer, The computer would freeze up and I would get a message saying that my graphics display driver has stopped functioning and that I should reboot. Can someone please tell me how to fix this
When you installed the NVidia driver did you first uninstall the existing driver then disable your antivirus program while installing the new (old) one?
(I have been using version 81.85 since it came out and have not noticed any problems but I am not a heavy gamer so perhaps I have not attempted to use the portion of the driver which has bugs.)
If you didn't unistall the existing driver before replacing it, as Denny indicated, you may need to use Driver Cleaner 3 (free at omegadrivers.com). Uninstall the nvidia driver using Add/Remove control panel, and then run Driver Cleaner 3 to remove the last bits of nvidia drivers that get left behind. Then reboot and install the replacement, with antiviral software turned off.
Personally, I'd remove the NVidia driver using the Driver tab of NVidia Properties in Device Manager. That's what I've always done when upgrading those drivers.
Thank you for the help. I think thats what the problem is when installing my new Nvidia driver since I first install it and then I uninstall my old one. But as I tried the correct way, When I first uninstalled my Nvidia driver, the screen began to flicker and then after a minute or two it would shut off before I can install the New one. Then I would have to log in with the last configuration that worked method, getting me where I started in the first place. sorry for the inconvience
Denny,
I've always followed nvidia's advice to use Add/Remove to uninstall their drivers:
http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=10&p_created=1096404673&p_sid=Op1ZflVh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD0yNTUmcF9wcm9kcz0mcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=&p_topview=1
I've followed that up with Driver Cleaner because, according to omegadrivers, some bits get left behind. He seems to know what he's doing since he tweaks nvidia (and ATI) drivers for gamers and Dell users have reported that his drivers work well.
ennders,
Which nvidia driver did you have to uninstall? I updated nvidia driver (Dimension 8400, XPpro SP2) to newest v81.95 tonight because it includes a fix for very minor issue in v77.72 that I encountered. v81.95 sure is
buggy,
buggy,
buggy! My system kept crashing, even with apps that weren't video-intensive.
Quicktime wouldn't work. I could open QT file on CD-R but when I clicked Play, QT insisted the drive was empty and just froze. Audio CDs (Windows Media Player) sounded terrible and Task Manager and Device Manager kept freezing too.
I used Add/Remove to uninstall v81.95 and ran Driver Cleaner 3. The DC3 log showed 4 files and 1 registry key were removed. So Add/Remove didn't do such a good job on the old driver. Reinstalled v77.72 and no more crashes, but QT is trashed so I'm downloading it from the net while I type this. When will I ever learn not to fix what ain't broken...?
