PAGE FILE HELP!!!!

After changing the setting of my page file in XP (Home edition) I try to restart the computer (as directed by MS) and on boot up, when I log in, it gives me the following: " Windows created a temporary paging file on your computer because of a problem that occurred with your paging file configuration when you started your computer. The total paging file size for all disk drives may be somewhat larger than the size you specified." I've got 512 of memory (the computer came with 256K and I inserted a second memory stick)  When I go back to the performance tab, the pagefile remains at 256K.  I've tried everything---HELP!!!
