PC Restore HELP!

I have a Windows XP Home Edition desktop. It had alot of viruses and it wouldn't do some of the software programs like Defraging and Windows update. So I wanted to restore it using the CD. We looked at the manual that came with the computer and we really have no clue what the computer is doing. Here is what we are doing:

About 3 days ago we rebooted the computer we press F12 then we go down to the CD. press F8 for agreeing to the terms. We select "Get a new copy of Windows XP". It will then Install updates which will take hours then it will go to a black page and do absolutly nothing. We even tried to recover and repair but it will do the exact same thing. Now after agreeing to the terms a Stop Error Screen will come up. And if we just let the computer reboot it will go a black screen and do nothing.

Yes I did call Dell and a assistanct said that the hardrive is fine. Then another assistant got on the phone and said that I will have to pay fees to get it fix. I just dont have that kind of money to get something like this fix.

You don’t mention computer model, anyhow:

For PC Restore step-by step procedure click here

For Clean Install step-by step procedure click here

I believe its a Dimension 4600 Series. I'm not too familer with the models. Yeah I tried both of those links 2 days ago, but they are not working. Like I said a Stop Error page keeps showing up so I can't do anything. I believe desktops use a 3.5 SATA Hard Drive. Can I use a 2.5 SATA instead?

Can understand if PC Restore utility isn’t running/working – if that’s what you mean?

But don’t understand Clean Install doesn’t work, unless meaning an XP Clean Install doesn’t fix the problem?

It would help if you can post the STOP error code/message being generated

If you are now considering replacing HDD then much better if you create a new post in Disk Drives (HDD, CD/DVD, Blu-ray) Forum click here

Ask hardware experts for advice on most suitable replacement HDD for your system, but you will need to confirm computer model otherwise they won’t be able to help

If it’s the manual for a Dimension 4600 then that must be the model you have???

Yeah thats what I want the computer to do. The PC Restore Utility. Its not runnning right. We cant get it to run. I figured out how to get to the HDD, I had to slide the panel off. Yeah Dimension 4600 is the model. I might just have to replace the HDD, so chances are I will go over the the Disk Drive forum to see what HDD I need.

    1. You never answered the error code or message question?

    2. Have you run hardware diagnostics?

Either from the F12 key boot menu or using Dell Resource CD & booting from CD-ROM device

    3. How do you know that you need a new hard drive, it could be something else?
