Printers and Vista

I bought a Inspiron 6400 recently that came preloaded with Vista.  I tried to use my HP 3820 with it but no go.  No Vista drivers.  The printer was a bit long in the tooth so I gave it to my son who is running XP - he's happy and up and running - and I went out and bought a Canon M830.  Again, no Vista drivers available - so I'm not happy - staring at a brand new printer that can only photocopy.  Went searching at the Canon website and eventually got directed to a site with Beta version Vista drivers.  Still no good.

I had a few other problems - mainly "compatibility" issues with other software I own (Musicmatch, Cyberlink)

I also have a suspicion that Vista Installshield is not installing updates propoerly - Vista is (apparently) installing two updates every time I shutdown.  (I think its the same two updates whatever they are.)

So I am going to give Vista the flick for 6 months or so.  Can anyone tell me how to reformat the drive and remove Vista?

My 64 bit Vista didn't automatically install its driver for my HP laser printer, and I had to install it manually.  Did you tried to install your Canon driver manually?

If not, go to control panel and select hardware and sound, then select printer.  A printer box then opens and on top you'll see add printer. After clicking on it, another window opens in which you'll chose the port connection, then manufacturer, then printer type.  I see Canon Inkjet MP830 among the listed printer drivers in Vista.

This driver may be a beta driver in which the only basic functions will operate, like my HP (print only with no scanning, copying or faxing).  (HP support informed me that a completed Windows certified driver that allows full use of the scanning, copying and faxing of my HP printer won't be finished until July.  That's one of the reasons why I have dual boot of Vista and XP on my computer.)

First you need an XP disk Full version would be best. No you cannot use the one for your son's computer one copy per computer. If you try to use his it will install but it will not be able to be activated.

After doing this Boot from the CD when ask where to install it to pick your C: drive and delete the partition then let XP recreate and format the drive when it is all done installing you will have a drive with nothing but XP on it.

MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP ANY FILE YOU WANT TO KEEP as this will delete EVERYTHING on your computer and you will not be able to recover it.

Hi celticone 52 - at one point it asked me to choose printer from the listing however the Canon MP830 didn't come up.  I'll try again though through Control Panel - thanks - Kob-ster

So the Canon Inkjet MP830 that I see listed for adding printers is different from the model you have?

To my surprise no Canon printers came up at all - we have different lists?

In the window for selecting a printer, on the left is a pull-down listing by manufacturer in alphabetical order.   Select Canon, and then you select Canon Inkjet MP830 in the pull-down listing on the right.

    Hi there cleticone52
I don't know why Canon was not listed in my pull-down screen (and yes I do know my alphabet (:smileytongue:)).
None the less I today managed to remove Vista and now have XP up and running.  I've loaded up the Canon printer and its behaving just fine.
Thank you very much for your persistant pursuit for an answer.
    Cheers
