programs not running?????

windows xp starts but when I click on the icons on my desktop the'll disappear for a second then come back, but won't open. Also, nothing opens when I click on them in my start menu.PLEASE HELP ME!!! This has been going on for a couple days and I can't open anything to try and find out whats goinig on. BTW- posting from cousins pc!!

    This is no fix but when you right-click on an icon and then select properties, does it show the correct path? Ex., if you have Notepad on your desktop, the path should be 'C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE'. I suspect a virus as a possible cause but that's just a guess. Was your AV software up to date before this happened?

    not sure if they have correct path,  I'll have to check it out when i get home. but no my av  wasn't up to date.
