Since I have had this 8400 system I have had little success recording data onto CD's.I did make one backup of "my Documents" once but today when I attempted to add two more small files Record now said it was successful and even displayed a new list including them. However when I use Windows explorer to recheck they are not on the disk, just the previous save is. I NEED to make some backups before something happens.
So:
1. Any thoughts on problem above?
2. Can anyone state with certainty that GHOST 9.0 will function on newer Dells using the NEC ND-2100AD DVD drive that dell is supplying to make DVD "not CD" backups? If so I'm off to buy it.
I, too, have a new 8400 with RecordNow Deluxe. So far I have not attempted to use that program because I find that Windows XP can do the job very nicely with their CD Recording feature. If you haven't tried it you should give it a chance before purchasing another program. The only reason I purchased RecordNow Deluxe was the advertised features such as labels, etc. I have tried this part and was very disappointed. XP, of course, doesn't do labels either but I do have Easy CD Creator 5 Patlinum - a program that would not work on my 500 Mhz Pentium III but will work on my new 8400! Sounds crazy but is true. Good luck.
Thanks for your input Bessie but that program will not do what I need/want to do. I must span dvd's to do a full backup then do incremental or differentiual saves. XP'S native program will not even find my DVD burner "CD OK" as something to save filers too.
I don't believe you will be able to span DVD's using the basic RecordNow software as your backup program. You can get more information at Sonic's website however, for full system backup they will recommend their "BackUpMyPC" utility...of course, other true backup software will work as well. As I read the information as it pertains to RecordNow, the only function within the program capable of disk-spanning the the "Archive" feature which is different from true backups.
As for Ghost 9.0, it is a very slick, polished utility that in no way resembles prior versions of Ghost. In fact, it is essentially, "Drive Image" which Symantec acquired and morphed into the Ghost lineup. It does ship with Ghost 2003 as well as the current version so you would have a great deal of flexibility. For whatever reason, I found I was unable (after multiple attempts on CD & DVD media) to burn an image directly. In Symantec's KB the error I experienced was attributed to anti-spyware applications when using Drive Image which, is the technology Ghost 9.0 utilizes. I have no doubt I could have saved the image to my HDD and burned from there using RecordNow with no problem but since I already have Acronis True Image (excellent in it's own right), I returned Ghost 9.0. If you decide to try Ghost 9.0 and have an issue burning directly (mine hung around the 74% completion mark on both CD & DVD media) and do not mind first saving the image to the HDD before burning it to media then it is worth a look. Of course, your mileage may be better and the issue may never arise.
Thank you Dan-I just looked at the Acronis site and its quite interesting.
My bottom line is to save every 3 or 4 months a full backup of my system to DVD'S. Frankly I dont care what they call it, mirror, image, or backup as long as it will recover me to a reformated drive in the event mine smokes.
I also want to do a weekly incremental or differential backup of my data files to a DVD in such a way that I could recover a selected file if needed. Like if I foolishly overwrite one "again". After the first one a CD would probably be sufficient.
Can I trouble you for your bottom line on Ghost 9.0 or Acronis 8.0 based on your experience. No details just which way would you go.
I have Acronis True Image on both my Dell 8400 as well an old Compaq PIII laptop. Wonderful product! I back up both to an external HD via USB and it works like a champ.
