Sleep

New XPS 720, it would go to sleep automatically for the first few days, now it never goes to sleep automatically, although it will manually.  I suspect there some program or process that prevents it from sleeping, any ideas?  Thanks.

I don't have a solution to your problem - I just have the SAME problem with my Inspirion 530 running Vista, and will therefore tag along to see what advice you get!  Like yours, my computer would sleep the first few days I got it, too.  Now, not only will the computer not go to sleep on schedule, I can't even put it into sleep mode manually, either.  I am aware of the "mouse motion" problem, and try to avoid it by using the keyboard.

Did you go into power management and enable hibernation. it will say system goes to sleep 1hr,2hr,4hr, never. just tell it you want it to go to sleep in 3 hours of non use.

Per suggestion elsewhere in the forum, I googled "Vista sleep problems" and found a good tip - though it hasn't fixed MY computer yet.  Go to Control Panel, bring up Device Manager, and select properties for the mouse; on my machine there is a Power Management tab, and on it the option allowing the mouse to wake the computer or not; I  unchecked mine to eliminate the possibility the mouse was a problem.  There's a number of other devices in Device manager that can wake the computer; one person solved his sleep problem by disallowing both the mouse AND the keyboard - and then used the power button to come out of it (but I haven't dared to do that yet).  You might try taking your mouse out of the equation first, and see if it helps you.

I also found this in the MicroSoft knowledge base:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927821

Yes, I have enabled sleep from the power management menu at 1 hour.(the default Dell profile.)  It used to work, but now does not.  I have not used hibernate as that is different from sleep (just ask a bear.)

I change the settings on Network connecting device. There are a number of options for this device. i just unticked them all.

Did not touch the mouse or keyboard left them to wake up my PC when touched or moved.

Unticking all the wake up by ******* on the Network connection  stopped my machine form waking up when I am not there.

Wait, I think I found it:

When sharing media, idle to sleep.

I changed it to "allow computer to sleep."

I bet that's it, as I have media sharing running all the time.

    I'll followup.

Thanks.  Where do you find these settings?  I can't find them in the control panel.

Just in case you need them

    Control pannel/System/Device manabger

Then right click and select properties on the device you want to check its power sleep mode.

I was unable to find this setting anywhere.  I turned off media sharing and the problem went away.

How can I turn it back on and change the setting you reference above? (Vista Business 32/Inspiron E1505).

    Thanks
