SmartStep Random Shutdown Fix Solution

If your SmartStep has been randomly shutting down, here is the fix:

Vacuum out the two fan vents (on the back and side of the laptop) or use a can of high pressure air on the vents. Your computer has been shutting down because the heat sink fan area is filles/caked with dust and is causing the processor to overheat and shut the whole system down.

If you live in a high-dust region, you should do this once a month, otherwise, once every few months.

This will fix the computer immediately.

(If you haven't ever cleaned it out and the vacuuming or blowing doesn't work, have a computer tech clean out the area and then you can regularly maintain it).

Dell Tech support isn't giving this solution, but it works!

Apparently, this problem is occurring on a frequent basis with all owners of the SmartStep 200/250N computers.  I am taking your suggestion and and using the compressed air blower.  Hopefully, that solution will work for me.  DELL does not seem to respond directly to our complaints.  Twice, I have asked for their assistance.  Twice, they have sent a canned message telling me to check for the SASSER worm.  I have told them both times that I have scanned for that virus and that I have an updated virus program.  It is useless.  I continue to get the same response.
