I installed SP2 yesterday and to make a long story short, eventually had to get with Dell in (you guessed it..India) for major help, eventually reinstalling the operating sys. to allow me to log on. This rep. said SP2 was trouble and that I should uninstall, which I did. She said many problems arrive with SP2...?? Any comments ??
I can't say I blame them for telling you that since many, many people are having trouble. I've got in on only 1 system...my laptop but a new system I just purchase from Dell is shipping with SP2 already installed. What I want to know is, what happens if I want to take off SP2? How do I reinstall without SP2?
I have installed SP2 on 14 different machines to date - some Dells, some not, and I've had no problem running it except with the Prescott based Intel CPUs (90nm process P4 and Celeron-D), which requires pre-patching or BIOS update prior to SP2 update.
It is not possible to remove SP2 if it has been slipstreamed and has become part of the installation. The only way is to install from a pre-SP2 setup CD. If SP2 has been installed afterwards, there should be an entry in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to remove SP2 and restore Windows to prior state.
Installed it on on all 4 of my machines with no problems from XP. It did cause my Roxio Easy CD creator to stop working. I uninstalled Roxio and then reinstalled it, problem solved, plus I also have several other programs on the list of programs experiencing problems after SP2 upgrade, I however don't have any (Photoshop, Auto Cad 2004, etc.). On one of my PCs (Sony Laptop) I did uninstall SP2 to see what would happen. It prevented my Windows Update from working (very insteresting). I just formatted my HDD to get rid of the OEM sony junk prgrams and used my Slipsteamed Windows XP with SP2 to reinstall it for testing, it works just fine also but the draw back is that I can't uninstall SP2 with out formatting the HDD with my XP SP1a CD. Oh well, I'm not having any problems with it, so I hope that I want have to.
I too installed SP2 and it slowed my Inspiron 1150 to a stand still. I restored it back to before I installed it. Well we know a couple of fixes but when are we going to get the patch or update from Dell to solve this problem. SP2 work fine on My wife, daughter & my desktops but it killed my Dell laptop.:smileymad:
She said many problems arrive with SP2...?? Any comments ??
She is an idiot. To this day, there are still no significant bugs that have been identified in SP2, with the exception of a problem with VPN, for which Microsoft provides a fix. Just about all the problems that people are having result from installing SP2 on machines that were already half-broken.
I can't say I blame them for telling you that since many, many people are having trouble.
As I said, those "troubles" are not SP2s fault. That "many, many" people are having trouble means nothing at all. "Many, many" people are having trouble starting their car in the morning. Does that mean there is something wrong with cars, and we should go back to oxcarts?
What I want to know is, what happens if I want to take off SP2?
Dietmar, I feel we're both right (huh?). The average user whose machines are working fine for their daily use, who let's update take his system to SP2 and then suddenly has many programs that don't work will obviously feel SP2 is the culprit....which it is. Many programs I have had to be uninstalled and reinstalled to work correctly.
As far as my comment about how to take SP2 off on a Dell supplied OEM slipstream, well, that was tongue in cheek knowing it can't be removed.
Try not taking all these comments so personal, there's people with real problems to deal with an this ain't one of them :)
I installed it on my desktop and had to turn around and immediately uninstall it. I do a fair amount of HTML programming and it was screwing most of my applications that I do. I know they are just settings probably but until I know how and where to change them I had to get rid of it.
I use a program that I push a download button to open up a piece of HTML. Normally it pops open the dialog box to ask if I want to save it or open it. When I hit open it opens in a new window.
Then I can hit the edit button at the top to edit with Context.
Pretty much all of these things didn't work with SP2. The dialog box doesn't open it just opens in the same screen instead of a new one. Then when I push edit with context it doesn't give me the html it opens up blank. Lots of problems for a simple task. I uninstalled SP2 and everything was back to working perfectly.
