Transferring backup onto a new computer

So I just got a Dell laptop running Windows XP. Due to an audio hardware problem I was told by tech support that they'd swap my laptop for a new one of the same model which will arrive in a week or two. However, I'd like to be able to install stuff on my laptop now and not have to do it again in a week. Could I install things now and then make a backup using ghost or some other program to transfer my settings and programs onto the new laptop when it arrives? If it matters all the programs I'd like to save the trouble of reinstalling and setting up again are freeware programs like firefox.

If the new notebook has all the same hardware etc it sould work just fine.

Image the partition to and external source. Then restore that image to the new notebook when it arrives. As far as that goes you could probably just swap out the hard disk between the two and you wouldn't have to do anything.

To add, you can't "copy" programs from one PC to another.  The Programs must be installed using the program's installation routine.  All you can copy over is "data" (e.g. wordprocessing files, pictures,  e-mail, etc).
