Unable to Open Spreadsheets

Everytime I go to open a spreadsheet sent to me by someone, I keep getting the same ridiculous message:  "File path not found (then shows about 700 numerals and names under Documents and all sorts of strange things)....it is possible it is already open or someone else is using it."  No one else can be using it since I'm the only one that has access to this computer.  If its any help, I have Windows XP 2000.  Has any one else ever run into this problem and if so, what have you done to correct it?  I'm open to any and all suggestions.  This is getting ridiculous!  Dell's Support says contact Microsoft....Microsoft says contact Dell and on and on and on.  Surely someone has run into this problem and knows how to correct it!!  HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Never had that problem, but assume:

    1. You mean your OS is Windows XP & you have Office 2000 installed?

    2. That you are trying to open a spreadsheet attachment in Outlook Express?

What type of file is the attachment, is it a MS Excel (.xls) type file?

    PS

Have you previously, always been able to open such “sent” spreadsheet documents?

No, its home Windows 2000 XP and the spreadsheets are .xlr...Outlook Express isn't involved....ISP is SBC (now AT&T)/Yahoo, so I guess it's in Yahoo?  Just started having the problem - in retrospect - since AT&T/SBC merged, so I have an idea its related to something AT&T did to screw up things - they've always been good at that.  Trying to get any kind of answer from AT&T/Yahoo is kind of like trying to get blood from a stone - they hook you up with Rajeed over in India who doesn't have the slightest idea what's going on - so I thought I'd try here before trying them as the court of last resort.  Thanks for the response - hope all this helps (sorry if I got carried away on my anti-AT&T tirade!!).

    OK, understood, first check:

Folder Options File Types tab settings are correct for MS Works Spreadsheet or Chart (.xlr) type file, albeit there’s probably no reason for incorrect or changed settings/values.

MS Works Tools > Options > General tab, ensure (if this option appears) Ignore other applications is NOT check box enabled.

But if the problem coincided with ISP service change, then it’s a good bet they are the culprits?

Seem to be a lot of AT&T/Yahoo problem posts in the Dell Forums?

Most ISPs have there own User Forums – Good luck with your ISP endeavours

Thanks - I'll give that a try and see what happens.  AT&T/Yahoo gets dumped as the ISP when the contract runs out in August or September.  I've had enough of their nonsense!!  Will check and see what happens tomorrow when I have some spare time and get a chance to make any corrections to things if they aren't right.  Thanks for the help!
