Unmountable boot volume

I`m getting the dreaded blue screen and umountable boot volume message every time I boot up.  I thought this would mean a simple use of the recovery console or reinstall of windows, however when I boot using my windows xp disk it tells me that no hard disk drive is present.  This isnt true as bios picks up the hard drive and the dell diagnostic utility scans the hard drive ok.

I should say that I`m booting using an older windows xp disk, and not the one that came with the dell, could this be the problem?  When I scan using the diagnostic tool, this error message appears:

0f00:0244
msg: block 7806505 uncorrectable data error or media write protected.

Any help would be much appreciated!

how old is the computer ?? i would suggest these steps

    restart the computer
on seeing the blue Dell logo screen press Ctrl+alt+D keys simaltaeously. ( the letter D for DOG and NOT delete)
this needs to be done a couple of times and a by Trial and error method you can get to a screen which says
running IDE diagnostics .... please wait
it will run for 3-4 minutes and you will get a result code
    look under IDE -1
if you have an error code 7 ( read failure ) or error code 5 ( electrical failure )
then it is ime to call DELL HARDWARE SUPPORT  for a possible hard drive replacement

If this is/was an SP2 install and you are using an SP1 disc, then very possibly this is what the problem is.

Definitely, you need to replace your hdd since the hdd diags already failed.  But you can still try recovery console  and run chkdsk so you can at least backup your files before replacing your hdd.

    Recovery Console:
