So I have a dell inspiron on Vista, and I am trying to upgrade to windows 7. I have the installation disks. I followed the instructions and put the "upgrade assistant" disk in first. My computer recognizes it, and then it comes up, scans my computer, and then it says "Dell Wireless WLAN card utility is incompatible, may we remove it?" I clicked yes, and then it comes up with a messaging saying something along the lines of "Dell Wireless WLAN card utility could not be removed. Please uninstall it manually and restart the Upgrade assistant." Now I tried to uninstall it manually through Control Panel-add or remove programs. However, it will not uninstall it, it says "Error: (and then an extremley long what appears to be a file location like c:\build\blahblahblahblah)" Now I searched this on my computer, and could not find that file or w/e it was, nor could I find it when I searched it on google. The upgrade assistant will not let me continue until it is uninstalled. I tried to skip the upgrade assistant and put in the orange disk that came with it, and I got a message saying "Error: Please do not put this disk in until prompted to by the upgrade assistant.".... So how am I suppose to get Windows 7, when that stupid utility thing must be removed but it cant be? Please help me! :emotion-9:
I tried that still wouldn't let me uninstall. When I tried to do it in safe mode it came up with the loading bar like it was going to uninstall, then it dissapeared and said the utility had stopped working. I tried it three times. :emotion-6:
Have you tried to disable it before you tried to uninstall it.
Click on Start-->Run and type in services.msc
Right-click on the service called Dell Wireless WLAN Utility and click on Properties.
For the Startup type select disable (if enable is selected).

If the error is something like this, "C:\build\PBR_REL_5_10_38_30\win_external_wl\src\tools\install\app\bc\mwls\Update.cpp.58". Then what you can do is go into safe mode by pressing F8 at boot, and uninstalling it from there. If you run into problems, try reinstalling the software, then uninstall it again from safe mode. You won't need it for Win 7, as it has it's own software.
I was able to fix it, I downloaded an installer program. Of coarse, it couldn't uninstall it either! BUT, he did tell me the file location, so I went to it and just hit either cntrl delete or shift delete, either way it did a peremanant deletion and worked.
