Windows Directory

Can someone tell me how to get into Windows Directory? My pc won't communicate with my 4990 Epson scanner and I get a message that says "Make sure there is a valid source for you scanner in the Twain Directory found in the Windows Directory". I've been trying to get the scanner to work for two days now, and finally got this message.

    The path is
    C:\WINDOWS\twain_32

When you run the software for the scanner it should put a folder, maybe called Epson, here.  If there is no reference to your scanner there, try reinstalling the scanner software.

Double click each of the following, in order
    My Computer
    Local Disk C
    Windows

Scroll down till you see a folder called
    twain_32
Double click it and the folder should be in there

Hope you can manage now as I`m off to bed.  If you are stuck I`ll be back sometime tomorrow.

Thanks, Dunedin. I'm not too savvy about these things, so can you tell me how to open the path to check it? Do I go in to Run or Search?

I checked it and all that's listed is one entry that says  escndv  and another says  wiatwain.ds

I guess it should say Epson, right?  Got any ideas on what I should do? As I said, I've installed and re-installed several times. The Epson which is a 4990 Perfection scanner works okay on my old 4300, but not on the E510 where I need it for Photoshop. I've called Epson and went through a whole driver update step by step install, but that didn't help. I guess they gave up, because that's all they said they can do for me.

    "escndv" is the Epson Scanner

"wiatwain.ds  " is a Digital Research Technologies Scanner

So the question is "Did you have a Digital Research Technologies scanner installed before?  If you did it looks like you have not uninstalled it properly and this is the problem.

So try uninstalling that old scanner and see if things are better
If you need more help just post back

I appreciate the time you're taking with this, Dunedin. This is a new pc and the only thing on add or remove programs besides the Epson is a program called Digital Content Portal and one called Digital Line Detect. Athough the Epson came with Epson Copy Utility 3 and Siverfast Epson-SE.

The other thing is that I had an HP 4470c scanner on the 4300 which I might not have uninstalled correctly, and wonder if when I transferred settings, some of that showed up on the E510? The only thing showing in add and remove for HP is HP Image Zone 4.0 and HP Software Update which must be for my HP Photosmart printer.

I`ve done more research on "wiatwain.ds" and there is one on my machine too.  It seems to be used by Microsoft too, so it looks like it is meant to be there.

How is the scanner showing in Device Manager?  No yellow splats?

Epson scanners and printers are very picky about how they get installed.
If you did not install it in the following order, try it out this way. And make sure you install the latest drivers that Epson gave you

Remove all the Epson software that was installed (make sure "escndv" is gone from the twain folder) and also remove the scanner itself from Device Manager.

Make sure the scanner is not connected to the computer.

Shut down the computer and power off, don't just restart.

Power up your computer and insert the Epson Software CD and install the software.

Leaving the CD in the drive, connect the scanner to the power supply and using the USB cable supplied by Epson, connect the scanner to the computer.

Power up the scanner. When the scanner shows the green light indicator, remove the Epson Software CD and restart your computer.

Try plugging it into a different USB connection.

Got it working this morning. I followed your install instructions wondering why the software people don't lay install instructions out like you did, and I also installed the new driver from Epson. It still didn't work, and this was about the eigth time for install, so I unplugged the USB and stuck it into a USB Hub, and that's when it started working. Hope I didn't mess up the registry with so many installs. And why would the Hub work and not the pc port? Is it faulty? I really appreciate your help.

    In Device Manager
    Right click scanner/Properties.
Check each Tab. Does it say everything is working properly?

If there is no problem showing here, I`m stumped too, like Epson:smileysad:
