Windows Task Manager - Processes

Can anyone explain to me what processes that I actually need running on my Dimension 8200.  How can I figure out what each one does and if I truly need it or if it is a process that justs slows donw my system?  For example how do I find out what the process SVCHOST.EXE does or CTsvcCDA.exe?

This site should help explain http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm  A word of advice, do not make alot of changes at once, run your system for a day or so in between changes to see how it reacts before moving on to others.  Read each description carefully.  Write down each change you make, so if you do happen to have problems, you can change back to the previous configuration.  Kip

Your internet address link says I am not authorized to view it.  Do you have any other links?

I'm not sure what the problem is, I get in fine.  Try http://www.blackviper.com and look for the 411 services link in the left column.  Kip

Whatever you do don't mess with SVCHOST.EXE, its essential.

I am going togive you a completely different answer, which many others disagree with, but here goes.  Unless you have a specific problem, leave all the process running, which a few exceptions.  Those exception are ones Microsoft now recommends to disable to improve system security.  Lastly, I am unimpressed with BLKVIPER's recommendations.  His is a valiant effort but, the use of the word "may" or "hunch"  in some explainations are not words I would "bet the farm on".  Software development is attempts to be precise.  Designs require specific actions depending on prior actions, logic diagrams or flow charts do not have a box for maybes or hunches, and any explaination that includes those terms does not convey complete understanding.  Computers a strange and wonderous tools, but they are dumb and don't think for themselves, and must be lead through each step of a solution.
