Windows Update Question

As most of you know, this past Tuesday Microsoft issued a monthly Windows Update. We have two new XPS 410's in my home running Vista Home Premium. They are nearly identical in configuration. Both are set to receive Updates automatically. I received seven Windows Updates on my computer. However, my son's 410 only received one, a Office 2007 patch. Even when we manually request Updates, a message says the computer is up to date.

Any ideas why he got short-changed?

    Andreychuk,

Yes, I checked the log. My son clearly doesn't have the updates that I have on my machine. For example, he doesn't have this months Malicious Software Removal tool. We've got identical Windows Updates for May but not June. This really has me stumped.

P.S. I'm just a tennis player with a (fairly) good amount of computer knowledge!  :smileyhappy:

I've seen this on one of my machines and on a few others. For whatever reason, Vista seems to lose track of what has and hasn't been installed. For example, one of my machines with Vista Ultimate indicated that there were no Windows Ultimate Extras available for download (and I had NOT downloaded or installed any of these). This behaviour persisted for a few weeks and then magically, everything straightened itself out.

In the interim (to ensure that I indeed did have all of the updates that were required), I used Windows Update and Office Update (rather than the single Microsoft Update tool). From IE, Tools>Windows Update and then in the left pane, Change Settings and uncheck "Use Microsoft Uptdate". Once you OK your way out of this, fire up Windows Update again and Check for Updates. You can always revert to Microsoft Update in the future.

I had 15 updates installed in the past 2 days...however, at least 11 of those were related to Office 07' issues.  Does he have some different software installed on his then you do?

    Rebel9,

Thanks for the tip - it worked like a charm. By unchecking Use Microsoft Update, I was able to quickly get the other six Windows Updates that my son's XPS was missing. We now each have seven updates on our XPS's from Tuesday's release. Now we know why you get the big bucks!

Also, Bill B.  -  Thanks, I may try your suggestion in the future if I run into this problem again.
