Windows updates

My Inspiron 1529 has completely frozen when i try to install microsoft windows updates. I downloaded the updates and was prompted to restart my laptop to install them but whenever i clicked to restart my computer the screen came up saying installing updates 1 of 17 and just stayed like that for hours and i couldnt do anything as none of the keys worked.  I tried restarting the computer and taking the battery out but everytime i did that it just went staright back to the installing updates screen.  I am completely stuck.  Please help.
                                                                                                     Thanks

There have been problems with one or more recent updates. Search for the problems and see if one of the ones you're installing is a problem. You could also select the first update not to be installed, and try to install the rest. If successful, then try to install the one you didn't initially install.

Thanks for the help guys.  In the end i just removed the battery pack and put it back in again and that sorted the problem out.
                                                         Thanks again.
