winodws 10 icon not showing

Hi,

I am writing from my dell XPS 15 9530. I want to update it to windows 10, but I do not understand why the icon is not showing. I have checked with windows update and manually and I have installed all the required updates. However, get windows 10 app says that the system is not compatible and that it is not up to date.
I heve also read that windows 10 is not available for volume license. I checked it using cmd and typing slmgr.vbs /dli in the output's description it is written VOLUME_KMSCLINET. Do you think this is the problem??

How can i solve my problem and install windows 10?

Thank you very much,

    Luca

    Hi,

You don't mention what version of Windows you're currently running on that XPS.   If your system was imaged by the company you work for, and they use a volume license, then according to this you may have problems upgrading.  Is the system running an image your company put on or the one you received from Dell?   (Was the XPS purchased by your company and perhaps they had a volume license image put on particular to their company?)

If it is a normal version of Windows that you're running you may want to check this Microsoft article out.  About 1/3 of the way down is a troubleshoot utility that will provide you more information.  Hopefully it's simply an issue of the BIOS or one (or more) drivers being out of date. That would be a simple fix.

Let me know your OS, where the image on it came from, and what the Microsoft utility tells you, and I'll see if I can provide more information.

    HI,

Thank you very much for your answer. I feel stupid you are right I completely forgot to write the version of Windows I am using. I bought the computer with windows 8 and then I have updated it to windows 8.1 without any problem. I bought the computer with the student discount for university from Dell.it. I use it at school and I have never changed the license key or the OS.

About the link you mentioned, I have already seen it, I have tried the troubleshooter which says unsupported version and that the system is not up to date. I also tried to manually check to have the required updates as suggested in the article and i have them all.

Today I have installed other new 35 updates but nothing changed.

    Hi,

Two things I would suggest.  First, it seems that it takes a few days after you update the system for the "Get Windows 10" icon to appear, it's not instantaneous.  Give it a day or so and you may see it suddenly pop up.

Second, when you did the updates to your system did you update the system BIOS as well?   (here is a link to the downloads pages for the 9530 if you did not)

    Hi, again

I tryed to follow your suggestion again, I have updated the BIOS. I have also done a factory reset to windows 8 and then reinstalled everything but still i cannot update it to windows 10. The Get windows 10 throubleshooter contnue to say that this version is not compatible and that the system is not up to date. For waiting some days I noticed that the troubleshooter asked me to wait for some hours so that the previous update could be applied, but once it was done I still got the messages I previous wrote.

I start to think it is really a problem of license, but I have the original one and I bought the computer as a student so I do not understant why I have a volume_license.

Give up and download the Win 10 iso from Microsoft using their Media Creation Tool. Remember, they are checking over 1000,000,000 installations for the upgrade.

    Hello,

Have you contacted your school's IT group to find out about the license / image that was on the system when you purchased it?  Or contacted Microsoft about their licensing requirements?    At this point probably thousands of XPS 9520 customers have upgraded to Windows 10 so I don't believe it's a question of our base image or drivers.   Microsoft is offering the upgrade and while we try to help people as we can, ultimately they are the ones that have the answers.

Try reaching out to them via their message boards or contacting them directly. Along with your college IT department.  That would be my only suggestions at this point.

Hi, thank you again for your answer. I haven't tried to contact the school, because I bought the laptop from Dell's website, I just had to prove I am a student. So the school is not involved. Anyway, now I finally have some good news, after the factory reset I tryed to download windows 10 as previously suggested, and while doing it I finally got the get windows 10 icon. Now I have booked it and I am waiting. I will post as soon as I get it. Again thank you for your help

    Hi again,

I finally update my laptop to windows 10. I have waited for a "your windows 10 is ready" notification but I didn' t receive it. So at the end I have update the laptop manually by downloading windows 10 from this page:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

I hope it can help others

    Best regards,

    Luca

Microsoft is upgrading about 100 million units. It seems they are able to download the majority of the upgrade software rather fast, but the evaluation of whether you can upgrade takes way too long. I only received one message for my five units, and it said I couldn't upgrade because of my graphics card not being supported. I then upgraded all five successfully using the Media Creation Tool. The D9100 that wasn't supposed to upgrade DID upgrade, using a generic video driver installed by Win 10. I was able to find a Win 8 driver that brought the video back to normal.
