won't do a dat gum thang!

Hi Everyone...first let me thank you in advance for any responses. I have a friends Dimension 4600 with Windows XP. They were having problems with it locking up and thought they may have a virus. So I suggested they use the recovery disk and reinstall. Well ...I did that and now it says windows did not shut down properly and gives me a list of options as to how I want to start but NONE of them work. It takes me back to the same screen over and over.
I can hit F12 and get into the utilities and run that check. It says that the hard drive fails the read and verify test. Is this saying that the hard drive needs replaced or is there still hope for it?
Thank you again.
