XP Networking

Hi,

I have my own Custom built PC i built myself. I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 5160. My DSL Internet Connects to my Desktop PC via USB. I would like to connect my Laptop to the spare ethernet port on my Desktop to share the internet access, but when i plug the pc's in together my desktop pc (one wif internet) says limited or no connection on local area connection. When i turn off modem, it seems to connect to the Laptop fine. But i need to share the internet, and i dont want no router! Any ideas why my desktop is displaying this?

Thx

Jamie

if you want to share one connection to the net, you either need a router or enable internet connection sharing on one of the pc's . . which is iffy at best.  Look in Help and Support for how to enable ICS

you will need to enable ICS and you may need a cross-over cable as well ...

also, if your DSL modem supports an ethernet connection, a router is a much better option  (there's a nice 802.11g belkin one selling at compusa currently for $10)

Ok, I'm confused on exactly what you want to accomplish, so let's start over.  Explain exactly what you want to do.

As far as I know, if you want internet access on both computers at the same time you will either need a router or a software router (which is basically was ICS is).  Either that or you will need to pay your DSL provider for two IP addresses and use a switch instead of a router (which is a bad idea if you also want to share files).

Again, what are you trying to achieve?

ok have you got MSN Messenger or AIM? it may be easier, Well my old DSL modem i had for my desktop pc just used to go in the USB port on it, i could plug in another computer on the Ethernet port of my desktop using X Over cable and ICS would b ok, but since i have connected my new DSL modem when i plug my laptop into my Desktop pc via X Over cable it says "limited or no connection on local area connection 2" but i want to know y does it keep comin up now i bought a new modem? and what does this actually mean cos all i wanna do is share a few files and the web.

The limited or no connectivity warning is new with Service Pack 2 -- I believe all it is saying is that the conneciton is question is not providing internet access

If I'm understanding your setup correctly you currently have a desktop and a notebook.  The desktop has a DSL modem plugged into one of its USB ports.  The notebook and desktop are connected via a cross-over ethernet cable.  You currently have internet on the desktop.  You currently want but do not have internet on the notebook.

To get internet on the notebook you will need to enable Internet Connection Sharing on the desktop for its ethernet card.  The notebook should then be able to get an IP address from the desktop and should have internet access through the desktop.

If you have service pack 2 or other 3rd party firewalls you may need to make adjustments to those as well...

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply, you understood me correctly. The only trouble is i cant enable ICS wif the pc saying no or limited connection, cos i would of thought it wouldnt sort itself out like that would it?

    Thanks
