Aurora R7, power supply upgrade
Hello, I have a Alienware R7 and I was wondering what I can do to replace the power supply. I was planning on getting a new GPU and the power requirements are more then what my 460 watt power supply can handle. I tried installing a Corsair CX550M — 550 Watt 80 PLUS power supply but one of the cables did not fit onto the mother board (I was told the board was proprietary and only alienware power supplies can be used in the Aurora R7). Is there a way I can get a higher watt alienware power supply or is there an alternative that can fit on the board? Thank you.

Thank you so much for the help. It really sucks how there's no official way to get the power supply. I might consider contacting Dell directly to see if they have any in stock. Computer was advertised as "easy upgrading" but all I've had was hassle lol. Thanks again

It is quite expensive now on eBay. I would wait for a better deal, but here is one.

yw. just to let you know Dell spare part price is probably at least two times of those on eBay, and that is if it is still in stock. I would consider aftermarket psu (modular) that may provide the auxillary 6 pin connector you need.

many discussions in the community on this topic. It seems you just need to split Corsair 4+4 cpu cable of your Corsair CX550M, one 4 pin for Aurora cpu port, the other for GPU_PWR port on motherboard. You are done.

There are no proprietary connections required for the psu in an Aurora R7. I as assuming the problem you experienced was trying to connect an 8 pin pcie cable to the GPU_PWR header on the motherboard which is incorrect. If left empty the pc will black screen. The correct connection is atx, same as goes into the CPU power header.

I would recommend at least an 850w psu, 460w to 550 is nominal change and not worth the cash spent. Also, definately would strongly recommend against getting a used psu on Ebay. These things have useful lives and when they go they can take your whole pc with them. This specific 850w model has been around forever abd you will likely get an 8× year old psu, no warranty, and you may not know how ti check if its stable. Also, the oem psu is not high quality, you can gey a quality psu with a waranty new for less than an oem Dell psu usually.

The longer you go over 140mm, the less room you will have for cable management.
Who needs room...well, maybe if your an air molecule trying to pass through a little elbow room might be nice...

these AW aurora psu has an auxillary power connector for gpu.
you can consider the 850W aurora R5/R6 psu.
