m17 R4, temperatures
Hello everyone,
I have just received my new m17 R4 laptop. I have just installed latest drivers, plugged in charging, and browsing through Chrome. CPU and GPU temperatures are ranging from 50-80 without any game even installed whatsoever and this is within the first hour of turning on the laptop. Is this acceptable or is something wrong with the product? I so far just placed 2 bottle caps under for airflow on a laptop stand. Appreciate any inputs
first thing that I notice is 24 tabs in chrome, people don't realize that chrome is a hardware hog. in the end, it doesn't matter what 'simple' applications you're using when looking at CPU temp. we need to only look at CPU use to determine if the CPU is loaded and 80C is reasonable. Many websites are designed very poorly for performance, ads and background tasks take a lot of ram and CPU.
you can use chrome's task manager (Shift-esc) or via developer menu, and windows task manager to figure out what is using your CPU. they can both be sorted by CPU use. Task manager you can look in the 'detail' and 'user' section to see whats using the CPU.
once you find the things using the CPU, you can disable or uninstall anything you don't want!
Hi @Gead_23 depends on what you consider "maintains high temperatures". The Intel CPU is designed for installation in Desktop and runs hot. Alienware laptops push CPU performance for gaming. Intel says high temperature is acceptable, providing CPU temperature is always less than 100ºC.

well its something everyone would recommend but if it were me I would closely monitor my temps using HWINFO then check if the graph is abnormal and if it is then I would uninstall drivers reinstall drivers then if the issue persists i would change thermal paste.
if it still persists I would assume its the hardware and replace

My m15 R4 i7/3080, which should run hotter than yours due to a different thermal solution, is sitting around 50c with Chrome and 24 tabs open. I can't image it hitting 80c in those circumstances and the fans rarely run loud when I'm using productivity or creative tools (Illustrator, Photoshop etc.)
If you take a look in task manager when your temps are at 80c you'll get an idea about what apps are hitting the CPU - it may be that you've got a process going on in the background that's taxing your CPU even while you're just browsing. Windows may be downloading/installing a large update if it's a new system but even so, 80c seems warm.
