DataDomain ddboost optimized duplication sanity check
Hi,
We are currently running NetBackup 7.1.0.4 on our AIX 7 master server and NetBackup 7.1.0.4 and OST version 2.4.2.0-320035 our Windows 2008 R2 over a 2Mb/s WAN link with replication capped at 512Kb/s.
The windows media server is the server configured to start the duplication between sites and has access to both source and destination DataDomains and when the duplication job starts we can see that it is running and "Optimized Duplication".
The Data from the remote site was moved to our central site via USB and backed up locally so the blocks could be populate and only unique blocks be sent over the WAN.
The problem that we have is that the duplication of a 400GB backup is running for over 300 hours even though it should only be sending around 5-6 GB/s of data where at 64KB/s I would expect it be taking around 26hrs.
If I look at "filesys show compression daily" the full backup taken last friday shows the following:
Date 24-01-14
Pre-Comp 463GB
Post-Comp 6.5
Total-Comp Factor 70.7
If I have a look at a full backup in DataDomain file replication it looks like it is trying send 32GB over the WAN Link:
sysadmin@DD160x# ddboost file-replication show file-history
File-replication Image Transfer History

My questions are:
Is the DataDomain doing what it is supposed to as far as Optimized Duplication is concerned?
As the WAN link is under 6Mb/s in size should we enable low-bandwidth-optimization? If so do we enable this just at the source or at the destination too? Once enabled what are the overheads to the DataDomain(s) whilst the FS are being re-aligned?
