Dissapearing Modem

I have an Inspiron E1505n, Ubuntu 7.04. Previously, I used to modem to access my ISP, and it worked fine. It still comes up with Network Manager. However, when I actually try to dial in, it gives me a "can't find modem" error. In the "restricted drivers manager" it has the conexant driver enabled and in use. However, when I use gnome-ppp it comes up with a "can not open modem" error. On the gnome-ppp setup when I click on "detect" it comes up with "no modem was found on your system." So, what do I need to do to get it working again? Could it be a bad chip or connection? Thanks

Try this - I had the same issue, some modules need to be blacklisted otherwise they take over the modem:
