How to change BIOS settings from command line?

Hi,

I'm working on a company which is leasing ~1000 Dell systems (Optiplex Desktops, Latitude Laptops) for two years, replacing them completely with new dell hardware, afterwards.

I'm working on a way to automate the process we handle the old boxes:

1. Backup local data in case we forgot something while migrating a user to the new system

2. Safetly delete data on harddisk

3. change bios setting from our corporate one to more userfriendly ones

Ok Step 1&2 were easy, the boxes boot up from my server via PXE as stateless clients, mount an NFS share and rsync all data on all disks/partitions/RAIDdevices to the share. then shred is run overwriting all local disks with random data.

But how can i change the bios settings from my script?

For now, I need to change the boot order from PXE, Harddisk to CDROM, harddisk, PXE and remove the admin password from bios. For notebooks removing the harddisk password would be nice, too.

I looked at libsmbios and use it already to get the name of every box , but haven't found anything to change boot order or remove the passwords in the documentation(which seems outdated). Can some give me a hint where I find some hints how to do that, or is it not possible to change that values and our students will have to keep doing it manually ?

syscfg utility from Dell works on PowerEdge servers to change BIOS settings ... you may want to give it a try ... there is also vbetool, but this is more for BIOS resets.
