17 r4 display upgrade available?
Just got my 17r4 upgrading from a 17r2 and am *really* disappointed at the display quality...it's not that bright, the colors look washed out and it's generally inferior to my (much) older 17r2 - is there any panels I can upgrade to? will the 1070 run a 4k?

you mean you'll need a cable to go with the new panel...
FHD > UHD - you'll need the 40pin cable and matching panel
FHD > QHD - same deal
UHD > QHD - just swap the panel.
You don't need to swap motherboards. I think I'm going to go QHD instead of 4k, but those panels seem to be a lot harder to find.

maybe i'm wrong here but i believe i saw someone trying this. after swapping the Display he was having some Compatibility Issues. i believe he could not adjust Brightness or something like that. i would trust Alienware-Rodrigo. the Alienware Guys are usually Spot On. and i don't think they are just trying to Sell you some Stuff you don't need.

Fair enough, but as an official rep he also can't suggest or endorse any unofficial workarounds either.

Did you ever end up testing this? I am interested in doing the EXACT same thing you are doing pretty much - upgrading from a FHD Panel to a QHD. Will the motherboard not support this?? I find it hard to believe that Dell/Alienware has a separate motherboard for each display panel resolution.

not yet - got the cable but still trying to find a 2k panel that's not twice the cost of the 4k panel
I've played around with going to refresh rates vs. GSync on/off - honestly won't bother me too much to lose gsync. Just want a slightly higher res - I saw the 2k 120hz in person - huge difference! really really want one. The 4k is nice too, but the 120hz panel looks noticeably better to me than the 60hz 4k. But that's just me. If I can't find a 2k by the end of the year, I'll probably just get the 4k. : /
Was hoping to get it done at the same time as a repaste, but looks like it's not happening soon.

oh, and it's not a separate motherboard per panel, it's two motherboards; one supporting gsync, one not. The difference is in the integrated Intel graphics port...

Hello, did you get the screen change?
I have a 2017 R4 with a FHD 60hz screen and I want to have the 2k screen 120hz, so i know what I also need the 40 pin cable and I will not have g-sync and also I will loose Intel Graphics.
to be honest, having v-sync at 120hz in a game in so much worse than g-sync?

Yes, there is a 4K configuration on the Alienware 17 R4. Unfortunately, you cannot upgrade from one LCD panel to the other because the motherboard will not able to support the upgrade, the motherboard will need to be replaced as well.
