Black Screen After Boot;

Ok, so my sisters comp will start normally up until after the xp logo finishes with loading; then the screen stays black with the cursor on it.
-When I boot in safe mode, same thing, cept the boarder of black screen says safe mode. VGA mode is useless also. I also tried boot with last know working config: nothing.

    Cursor located on the top left of the screeen?
     
    Sounds like a failed hard drive. See if you can run diagnostics extended test on the hard drive.
     
    Reboot the computer, when the Dell logo appears, press F12
     
    Note, it helps to post the computer model.

    I have seen the system hang there with a bad USB device plugged in. Make sure there are no non-essential USB devices plugged in, then boot. If it boots okay, then probably either the USB cable is bad, or the USB device itself is bad.
