CPU Help please

I would like to upgrade two Machines, an 8300, and a GX270, with a Pen 4 3.0 GHz 800 FSB 1MB Cache processor.
The processors would be Northwoods, as the Prescott requires an upgraded BIOS (not a problem i know) and Cooler block.
But seeing as i cant get a second hand 2.4 800 FSB to work, i dont want to buy either yet.
I have tried two used Pen4 2.4 Ghz 800FSB 512Kb Cache processors, in both the 8300 and a GX270, and neither have worked.
Have tried them in a Dell 2400 which is a lower spec PC, and they work.
Both the 8300 and the GX270 work with a 2.8 Ghz 533 512Kb Cache Processor
I have Updated the BIOS on both machines.
What happens at start-up, is the board,and Fan start, but thats about it!
Can Someone think of anything else i could try, as i don't want to go ahead and buy the new ones, without being reasonably sure that they will work.
