Dead Machine
I have a dimension 4700 - at this point I can't get it to boot up - machine starts, lights go on, I even had a bootable cd in the drive - but nada on the screen - I got one error message about a missing file then that was it. now I get a blank screen every bootup - hint - optical mouse doesn't light up so I am somewhere between hard disk crash or reg issues. Any help on a way to boot up to do diagnostics? I know this is probably asking for the impossible but I wanted to get another year out of the PC. any advice to boot is well appreciated.

Here's my first reply that got deleted, found it in the email. Had a typo that I corrected now...
Had drive lights up once and the pc power light, then hard drive light goes off after say 5 seconds - disk drive does get accessed caused the cd does spin some then stops - no dell spash screen - no chance to do F3 or F8 or F12. Pulled off cover and checked connections, reseated memory. That is as far as I can get.

I was out all yesterday. I'll check the back of the computer tonight and get back to you. On the beeping - no sounds.
p.s.I got a note from Dell that they removed my first reply to you. Was there something worng in that reply? I thought I typed that none of the Function keys that usually help in start up worked. Was there something offensive in there? If so I apologize - none meant - I was totally taken back that ot was deleted. I may follow up with site coordinator.
Appreciate you staying with me on this.

OK. On the front - there are two lights on the front. Both start green at first, then after 5-10 seconds left stays on (On/Off symbol), the right one with a disk symbol goes off.
On the back are four lights A B C D. A and B are Yellow C and D are green. Back to you.Oh yeah - no beeps. I think the owner said he used to get beeps but unconfirmed.
Thanks

Hi floydman625, The diagnostic on your lights are saying that you have a memory problem, see HERE. What i would do is to remove the memory, and try it with one simm at a time to find out which module is faulty. The beep codes are in the link as well.

Hi, Does the hard drive bootup, do you see any diagnostic lights, have you tried pressing F12 when you see thr dell splash screen, and running dell hardware test.
