Floppy drive runs when empty

On my Dimension 4300, the floppy drive doesn't seem to know when it is empty.  When I shut down the computer, it grinds as if reading, even though there is no floppy in the drive.  The Dell support person thought it was because the BIOS had my floppy as the primary boot drive (which it did), but even after I changed it to the hard drive as my primary and removed the floppy as a boot drive, it still does this if I have used the floopy at any time during my session on the computer.

    SSKamin,

Check to see if your antivirus program is set to scan floppy disks on startup or shutdown.

Using XP, then check out the following

Start > Run > Type, Regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_SYSTEM  > Current Control > Control > Session Manager > Memory Management  > Prefetch Parameters > Then set the "EnablePrefetcher" value to 0.

It's been a long time since was here, I've been so busy.  But your suggestion does not work.  My floppy drive still grinds away when I close down if I have used it during a session.

If you are using Win XP - delete recent documents, delete prefetch, clear temp and temp internet files
If you have Zone alarm - check to see if you have given permission to anything that may have run from a floppy.
ZA looks to the floppy drive if there is a program permission for a floppy driven item.
The same can happen from those other locations sometimes as well.

If so, it is taking a very long time to die.  This has been going on for many months.
