IDE device failed: Data compare error.
I've been having lots of slowdowns on my computer (Dell Optiplex GX400)and a few crashes. I ran the complete Dell Diagnostics and got 9 pages of error messages saying my "IDE device failed: Data compare error."
Each lists a different Offset. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if this can be repaired, and how. Here is a sample:
Msg: IDE device failed: Data compare error. Block 4, Offset 1819 - Data was 00h, Should be 1Bh.
IDE CDRW 2 - Write Test : Fail
Status: Fail Status Code: DOS DDG-D DISK 030 038
Device: IDE_CDRW_2 Test: Write_Test
Release: 1065 Module(s): Disk
Msg: IDE device failed: Data compare error. Block 4, Offset 1820 - Data was 00h, Should be 1Ch.
I'd appreciate any ideas!
thanks, Marianne

Thanks -- I've been backing up very often since this started happening.
Is there anything I can do to repair the hard drive, or should I just replace it?
thanks,
Marianne- You can run the Dell diagnostics on the drive, using the extended tests feature.Depending on what model PC you have, the diagnostics are either on the hard drive itself, or can be run from CD or floppy diskette.I would plan on replacing the drive,, there really is no way to repair a failing drive.

Thanks. I've run the Dell Diagnostics, and that's where I got these "IDE Device failed: Data compare error" messages.
Unless someone has a better idea, I guess I'd better look into a new hard drive.
