Memory????

Have two cd rom games that were working fine until recently. One game, Motocross Madness2 starts to load then just quits and another Frogger2 will run but the video is grainy. I think this might be a memory problem but am not sure how to troubleshoot. HELP!!

I have a 500 MhZ Dell Dimension Series L with 128MB of RAM. My system is only 1 year old. I defrag and clean temp files on a regular basis. It's only when my kids play certain games that the screen either gets grainy or one particular game won't load at all any more. Both games worked fine at one time.

What do you have for a system? What do you have for memory now? Have you ever defragged your hard drive or cleaned out your TEMP file in Windows? Which video card do you have and which drivers? Does the CD Rom Drive play music CDs without missing a beat? Does it sound normal when it is spinning? I doubt that it is memory unless you are running a new program in the background.

Not too familiar with the L series, but the 128 meg memory is plenty and you are doing the right things in defragging and cleaning out the temp directory. The L series uses Intel's own graphic drivers and are you using the on board video chip? The onboard video chip is not a very good chip for playing games as it has poor performance for most 3d games, but I am at a loss as to why they worked before and not now if nothing else has changed. Maybe Intel has better and updated drivers if you are using the 810 video chip. Some have installed PCI video cards and disabled the 810.

Updating to latest drivers is one step to troubleshooting this, but it can also be your CD Rom Drive. How much room is left on the hard drive? The Swap File needs some room.
