Microphone problems software or hardware based?!
This problem has been plagueing me for very long, and i cant find if its a software setting doing it, or the fact that my hardware is shot up, or not meant to do as i want anyway lol!
I own a Dimension 8300 with Windows XP and a SoundBlaster 5.1 Live Digital soundcard, and i am attempting to get working (one of my TWO) microphones. I have been plugging these microphones (and they both work fine for sure on other peoples computers!) into the red microphone jack on the back (which for some reason was covered up with a hard to remove cover when i got the Dimension, is this normal or does that mean that these plugs are inoperative...MAYBE THATS WHY I CANT GET THIS TO WORK!) and the computer refuses to allow me to speak through them, even after fiddling with Creative's programs, changing the plug to the line-in and using that, makng the microphone unmute from the volume bar eg, nothing works! I have purchased Dragon Naturally Speaking Standard and seriously, im in deep trouble if i cant get a microphone working (unless i spend more non-existing money on a USB microphone...would that solve my problem?!) as its just an expensive LUMP without a microphone obviously. One of these two microphones is a headset style, the other is a desktop style, and they both wont work at all! Not even a whimper goes through, with microphone boost on or not, and im starting to believe that the red jack is totally dead or never worked in the first place. But come on, this aint the cheapest soundcard out there, as if i dont have microphone functionality!? What could be causing this?
Does anyone have any good ideas here? Ive probably already tried everything there is, and am maybe here just for confirmation so i dont feel as guilty saving up for a USB microphone. But if anyone can save me the money id much prefer it, and ANY hints or tips would be deeeply desireable! Thankyou!!!

- You said you have a SBLive Digital PCI card in the system. The SBLive card (located rougly 3/4 of the way down the back of the tower) should have 5 jacks of differing coloring, the jacks run horizontally.
Above the SBLive card near the fan are the "covered" audio jacks for the integrated sound card on your motheboard. There are five of these jacks as well, though they are more brightly colored and highlighted than your SBLive jacks.
With the SBLive card installed, the integrated jacks are not NECESSARY and are likely disabled since your system detects the SBLive card as being installed. Oh i see! Youre right!
But i am using three of the SB Live plugs for my 5.1 Logitech z5300 speaker setup (black, orange and green), and the other two plugs are yellow and blue, no red, and the little images on the plugs dont have a microphone. Is one of these my microphone and/or line-in plugs? Am i in deep trouble here?!
Your help is really enlightening me, thanks so much!
- Ive plugged the two microphones into the two remaining plugs at the bottom (the SB Live plugs) (being yellow and blue), tried everything, and once again, failure. Why is this so hard?! How many different places in the computer decide the source of your recording? The creative programs, windows settings, voume control, its all working against me! Anyone able to shine more light into this darkness!

According to this, the microphone jack on the SB live card is the Center of the 5 jacks
The Green (Front Channel) Black (Rear Channel) & yellow (Center/digital) should be hooked to the speakers

#IWork4DellDageezerus that link was perfect, it helped me so very much, making me realise that my problem was that i had one of my 5.1 speakers in the mic plug! Good one!
But now im not so sure as to where the 5.1 speaker plugs go, they being:
Black - Rear
Green - Front
Orange - Center/Sub
I now have the black in the black plug, the green in the green plug and the orange in the orange plug (not the red mic plug lol) but when looking at the diagram it seems to tell me to have the green plug in the blue jack (so making it one on the far left alone (black?), and two on the right (Orange and Green?)). Do you have any idea what im talking about, lol sorry i cant describe this properly, but if anyone does an can help, please try! Thanks!
- Let me rephrase that last bit. The diagram tells me to have the rear out plug in the far right, but the colour black is on the far left (and since my speaker cable for rear speakers is black tipped im plugging it there) so im very confused. Any idea which is right?

Ports in order should be, (Moving from Midi port, if installed)
Black - Rear Channel (Black Speaker Connection)
Green - Front Channel (Green Speaker Connection)
Pink - Micorophone (Microphone)
Blue - Line In (Not Used)
Yellow - Analog Center Channel (Orange Speaker Connection)
