Modem problem

An elderly couple I know received a Dell 3000 computer as a gift. They have had it for about 6 weeks. Primary use is internet access. Today when logging on, a message popped up directing them to plug in the phone line. It was plugged in. I checked the line for them and it is working properly. I have to assume they have a bad modem. Any other ideas before I tackle support to get a new one sent to them?

Thanks in advance.

Support will not send you anything prior to you doing diagnostics with them, so reboot and hit F12 to run Diagnostics first.

That is good to know. I will visit them tomorrow and run that test. I have several different Dells and this is the first one to have a problem that would be warranty related. Everything else has died after the warranty ran out so it will be my first time dealing with Dell Support.

    Thanks
