Optical Mouse erractic movement -solution maybe?

I run a dimension 5150 which came with a Dell optical mouse(wired). The pointer behaved erracticily (it would jump and move around the  screen despite having disabled all mouse "smart" actions)so I changed the mouse to a logitec  optical mouse that I happened to have-same problem. This I believe is not a windows software problem as the same thing happened under Linux on the same PC.

I thought I would try a mechanical mouse but instead ended up buying a wireless mircosoft optical mouse which behaves great.Problem resolved.

it may be the surface it's trying to track on.  try buying a laser mouse (logitech mx1000, g5, and g7 come to mind as excellent choices -- although other brands offer cheaper options).  you'll get a lot more resolution and it will likely eliminate the jumps

EASY SOLUTION - The light coloured Mouse Mat supplied with your DELL Computer reflects on the mouse causing it to drift over and off screen... Turn it over to black surface and the problem will cease! However this non-slip surface is slow... so best to invest in a darker Mouse Mat!
I spent five hours trying to sort out this annoying problem, downloading new drivers etc. and as usual the answer was so simple it evaded me!
