Optiplex 755 cpu upgrade?
I have an Optiplex 755 sff with the q6600 in it and Im thinking about buying a mini tower 755 with the q6600 also. I know I can upgrade to the q9650, q9550, or q9450 no problem. But what about the xeon x3350, x3360, x3370, x3380, x3353, x3363? Specifically the x3363 because its 80w so I can use the stock hsf; and they can be found for really cheap.
I know they are not officially supported by dell but I have seen references that it will work online.
And would it be a feasible upgrade since the q6600 is 2.4ghz, 8mb L2, 1066fsb, 105w. The x3363 is 2.83ghz, 12mb L2, 1333 fsb and 80w.
My PCs are used for folding at home, general internet browsing, and htpc usage. I just want the most possible processing power from my old system.

You cannot update to ANY XEON X Series. The 755 is not a Server or precision Workstation

I read somewhere that if your motherboard can support a Core 2 Quad Q9550S, it should be able to support a Xeon E5440 since they share similar physical characteristics(i.e., 12M Cache, 2.83GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)--just as long as you use an appropriate LGA 771 to 775 adapter. However, the Xeon isn't on your list and some claim that the G33 Express Chipset, especially those installed in Dell computers, does not support any type of Xeon CPU. Could it be that with the latest BIOS update and proper modifications that the Dell Optiplex 755 should be able to support a Xeon E5440? Thanks in advance for any input on this question.

The Xeon X3353 and X3363 CPUs are socket LGA 771--so unless you're using a LGA 775-to-771 adapter and cut the plastic tabs in the CPU socket tray--it will not fit on the Dell Optiplex 755's motherboard, nor will it work for that matter.
On the other hand, Xeon X3350, X3340, X3360, X3370 and X3380 are all socket LGA 775 CPUs. Since I've never attempted this swap before, I have no idea if these CPUs are compatible in a 755. I'm guessing that BIOS microcode/AGESA code modification may be required to make it work.
While I have never successfully installed Xeon CPUs in an Optiplex 755--I have had a measure of success in making my Optiplex 330 run on an LGA 771 Xeon E5440 with the use of an LGA 771-to-775 adapter: http://valid.canardpc.com/10geuz
what about intel demand based switching ?
3363 doesn't supports it .. but 3353 does ..
i am not sure if 3353 will work in dell optiplex 755 ..

Found this old thread. I put a Xeon X3323 in a Dell Precision T3400 with a LGA 771 to 775 Mod. Works like a charm. I read somewhere that the Chipsets on the 755 and T3400 will run the Xeon X33xx but not the Xeon 5xxx series. So I am pretty sure that the 771 mod on a Dell 755 will run the Xeon X3363, X3353, and X3323. I would like to save the hassle of the mod. I believe the Xeon X3360, X3350 and X3320 are LGA 775 versions of the same cpu's and therefore would run in the Dell 755. Anyone know for sure?

also what is FSB Parity ? in some models this is present in others it is not . does it means we can install ecc ram in models that support fsb parity ? as there is plenty of 4g single module ecc momery.

Very pleased since the X3363 is rated faster than both the Core 2 Quad Q9650 and the Xeon E5450!
