Printer

A few days ago I could print using my usb port to a hp 1200 laser jet.  Then I tried to use my LPT1 port for a few days and now I want to use the usb port again.  I have gone through the whole trouble shooting program on windows xp and can't get the printer to print - although it did so well last week.
I have plugged the usb cable into two different usb ports.  I have gone into control panel and chosen the usb port to use.  I have restarted the computer twice.  It won't print.  Please help.  Thank you.

Apparently moving printer ports has "confused" the PC.  You will probably have to reinstall the printer software 9drivers).

    1.  Uninstall the printer and drivers and physically disconnect the printer from the PC.
    2.  Restart Windows.
    3.  Do a new install, with the Printers software/drivers but DO NOT connect the printer to the PC until the installation program tells you to.

Hi - Thank you - I tried all you suggested - it did not work - I called HP and paid for their assistance.

What we did was hook up the laptop with the bus port and the desktop with the serial port.

They could not explain why it worked the other way - laptop serial port and desktop bus port  last week and not know- but when I tried re-installing - windows kept giving me an error message :  Not passed widows logo testing with XP.... driver cannot be installed.  I tried to download the drivers for xp from hp site, but it said I was no longer supported.  Apparently my warranty expired two years ago and it would not accept my serial number.

So if you have any other questions about why I failed - please let me know...

Thank you again for your kind assistance -

    Sally

    Sally,

Your original post was unclear.  I took the post to mean you had one printer and you moved it from the USB to the LP1 port, not that you had two different printers and were trying to access the different printers on the separate ports.  An entirely different issue.

When you post, try to be as clear as possible with a problem so someone can give you valid assistance.

Hi - Sorry - I have ONE printer - two computers - they are both connected to the same printer - the printer has two ports - one serial and one USB.  The laptop was connected to the serial port and when I added the desktop - I connected it to the USB port - these connections worked well until I temporarily needed to use the serial port on the desktop.  I could not get it to print using the serial port.  So then I tried to hook it back up to the USB port and it would not print there either.  That's when I asked for your assistance.  Since your suggestions did not work  - re-installing - I called HP and they could not get the USB port on the desktop to work either.  So they suggested switching the two computers.  Hook up the laptop with the USB and the desktop with the serial port connections, both to the same printer.  This worked.  They could not explain why the USB connection on the desktop would no longer work.  Thank you again for your prompt and kind assistance -  Sally
