Processor question
It looks like I am going to have to replace my Pentium 4 and I found one on Ebay that matches perfectly except mine is a Pentium 4 3.6 660 and the one on Ebay is a 661. What is the difference and is it compatible with my Mobo? XPS Dimension Gen4

This is from my previous post on this problem...
This is an addition to my original post about system freezing and shutting off...
XPS Dimension Gen 4...changed Mobo and now unit boots to first post...all the while CPU fans are running full speed...error message says last shutdown due to thermal error...hit F1 to continue...as soon as I hit F1 unit shuts down totally...4 diag lights are A-green B-green C-green D-yellow. Power light stays green. Mobo came from Dell and have double checked all cable connections. Could this be a possible power supply? If so, how to troubleshoot. Thanks

from your manul for you light indications " Another failure has occured
- Ensure that the cables are properly connected to the system board from the hard drive, CD drive, and DVD drive (see "System Board Components"
.
- If there is an error message on your screen identifying a problem with a device (such as the floppy drive or hard drive), check the device to make sure it is functioning properly.
- The operating system is attempting to boot from a device (such as the floppy drive or hard drive); check the system setup program to make sure that the boot sequence is correct for the devices installed on your computer.
- If the problem persists, contact Dell.
recheck all your connections. You did apply new thermal paste between the processor and heat sink.
Remove all the ram and cards see how it powers on weather the fans still scream..
It looks at this point like it might be a processor issue..but try the other stuff first.
- Ensure that the cables are properly connected to the system board from the hard drive, CD drive, and DVD drive (see "System Board Components"
Sorry, here it is again. Am rechecking processor install as we speak. Will update.

- Sorry, but for some reason, the post got corrupted. I was able to see something about a thermal issue. Are you certain you istalled the processor properly. Thermal paste must be applied to the heatsink before it is installed and also the processor fan must be connected to the proper CPU Fan header on the motherbaord. The heatsink/fan must be installed properly. Any or all of these conditions must be met to insure that a heat related failure does not occur. If the processor senses a overheat condition, it will shut the system down. I would check all thes before ordering a new processor. I believe Davet50 replied to you also and his reply was corrupted. Hope this helps.
