restoring old software
I have so many problems with my dell demension III lr, windows 98, second edition system and find i cant correct them. I dont have a virus. I remember some years ago when system was still under warranty, and had reported a problem, a dell tech had me hit several keys, one of which was an F key and i got a menu of showing my system with a date. I had an option of clicking on a date, which i did and the system restored to that date. Is anyone familar with this. If so, can you help?

Actually, all of Dell's Win98 systems had ZZtop. It was a complete factory image in a hidden file on the existing partition. It was similar to Dell's PC Restore, but it was much more easily damaged.

There is a System Restore for Windows 98 and ME although it's not commonly known. It's SCANREG /RESTORE OR SCANREG /FIX.
The difference between win 98 and win ME is that in 98 this has to be performed in a pure DOS environment (meaning that you have to restart in MS-DOS mode) in ME you can use the command prompt on the desktop
Since you are using Win98, keep on pressing F8 key to get to Windows Advanced Options. Then select Command Prompt. then on a C:\> prompt type the following, pressing ENTER after each line:
NOTE: if you dont see C:\>, type cd then enter until you only have C:\> then proceed with the following commands.
cd windows
cd command
scanreg /restore
or
cd windows
cd command
scanreg /fix
Both commands, will list a series of date you can select from. Select a date, that you feel the system was working ok. I would suggest though, NOT to go further than 2 months. If it restored ok, congratulations!
Scanreg /restore is used if you had installed any hardware or software that corrupted the registry file and system file. Scanreg /fix is used if the you didn’t do anything and the registry and system files still got corrupted.
But you could try both. This process will uninstall programs that was installed from the date you selected to the present date.
If all else fails, try reinstalling Windows.

- Hi there: Thanks for your response. I did try the scanreg/fix and it did spend a lot of time on it. I cant tell if it's helped as yet.I have another question if you would. First let me give you a bit of history. When I got my Dell Demension III. i had no sound when playingmusic. i have a turtle sound card. after being fustrated by dell tech's i signed on with real player for their program and all was well.now i no longer have sound.i do note that in the system properties it has a question mark next to pci multimedia audio device.when i click it and follow the menu it winds up saying there are no other recommended drivers for y our system. any thoughts? previously i tried downloading the turtle sound driver, but never got it properly loades at one point the install said system would reboot with pci multimedia audio driver and i could browse it and complete the install where turtle loaded the driver. of course i dont know where turtle driver was downloaded as it downloaded without any menu giving me a choice of locations. this may be mute, since i didnt get sound until real player is installed.hope i haven't confused you too much. and thnks again
Hi Likesbb,
A question mark on device manager says that there is no driver for the device. This would mean that device wont work. You could download the driver again for Turtle Beach (file name: SCRZ4142.EXE) from http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?releaseid=r37728 .
It does have a warning that it should only be used for Dell P/N Turtle Beach sound card : 38FRH. So please do check your original order.

If it's still installed, you can try it - otherwise a clean install of everything is probably in order.
