Upgrade Problems
Hi All. I have a Dell Dim. 8250 with a Nvidia GeForce4 Graphics Card.... I just bought a ATI X1300 graphics card right off the Dell website because it was listed as compatiable with my comp. I go to install it and of course what happens, I get the orange light on my monitor and a black screen greeting me. So far Ive updated bios, made sure AGP is enabled on motherboard (didnt see any new motherboard drivers on the Intel website) and deleted all the drivers for my old card....Still getting the same black screen. Only problem ive every run into is that the device manager wont let me uninstall the display adapter cause it says i need it for startup. Im officially out of ideas and not looking forward to spending 1000 hrs on phone with Dell... Has anyone out their have any suggestions or has run into same problem?

- Its a Mx so itll be a good improvement and i wasn't looking to go crazy with a card. it only meant to get maybe 12-18 months more life on my comp before i get something new. If there are known issues why would Dell list the card as compatiable with the 8250s. I have a feeling I am gonna have to make an angry call to dell.
- Not sure. All I know is there've been alot of threads from others and some have started noticing a pattern in the card and computer combinations used.
While I understand you're not intending to go all out, I suspect Dell probably overcharged for that X1300, and a 7600GS, which is far better, can be had for around $100, so if the price point was around that, you might want to consider alternatives. - Go to ATI's USA website and look for new drivers and fixes. I saw one for some of these cards that under known problems with Dell computers not displaying at post and there was a work-around or fix. Later today I will see if I can find it. Seems I saw it for the X1600 cards.

If you choose to get a new card still, there are alternatives. You could probably get another card elsewhere that might be cheaper and better than the X1300, which is a lower end card. Is your GeForce4 and MX or a Ti? If it's a Ti, the X1300 probably wouldn't be too much better than your GeForce4, but if it's an MX, then the X1300 will be quite better. It's still not a fast card by any means though.
