When you look at the USB Controllers in your Device Manager, do you see any yellow circles with a black exclamation mark in it, next to the item?  If so, this must be resolved before that device or port will work.

Did you install the drivers that come with the adapter card or did you let Windows install its driver for it?  I would suggest using the one that came with the card.

Also, it might just be a defective card...

Have you tried calling tech support for the card manufacturer?

no yellow signs or red flags, just a 'Unknown Device' listed under USB Controllers.  When I plug my USB 2.0 hard drive into my USB 1.1 port it shows up correctly as 'USB Mass Storage' under Disk Drives....

I ran the setup program that came with the PCI card and rebooted... no change....

This has got to be a driver issue.  The computer can see there is a device attached to the USB adapter port but can't identify it.  Have you tried reinstalling the driver?  Have you checked the HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) at the Microsoft site?  USB devices require certain drivers and utilities before ever plugging the device into the port.  So check your documentation carefully for instructions.  Was the documentation clear about installing software first and then the card or vise-versa?

You may have to install the USB card manually - usually Windows does a pretty good job of detecting new hardware, but not always. 

Remove the unknown device from the Device Manager. To install the device manually, follow these steps:

1. Log on with an administrator account.
2. Ensure that the device is turned on and working.
3. Click Start | Control Panel | Add Hardware.
4. The Add Hardware Wizard appears.  Click Next on the Welcome screen.
5. Windows XP begins a search for any new hardware.  If it finds the hardware it will then install it.  If not, a window appears, asking if you have connected the hardware.  Make sure the hardware is connected to the computer correctly and click Next.
6. Windows XP then provides you a list of hardware that is installed on your computer.  Scroll to the bottom of the list and select Add a New Hardware Device, then click Next.
7. In the What Do You Want the Wizard to Do screen,  choose the Search For and Install the Hardware Automatically option and click Next. Windows XP will then perform an exhaustive system search.
8. If the hardware is still not found, Windows tells you that you can select the hardware from a list. Click Next.
9. In the provided list, select the type of hardware device that you want to install and click Next.
10. You'll see a selection window.  Choose the manufacturer and the device and click Next. If you have an installation CD or floppy disk from the manufacturer, you can use it by clicking the Have Disk button and follow the instructions.
11. Click Next. Windows XP will install the software for your hardware device.
12. Click Finish when the installation is complete.

I uninstalled the 'Unknown Device' through the Device Manager.

Went to the Add Hardware Wizard, and said 'New Hardware Found', 'Unknown Device', 'Device ready to use'.....

I uninstalled it again and ran the 'Add Hardware Wizard' with the device plugged into my USB 1.1 card and it completely installed correctly...........   But not in the USB 2.0 card!!

With it plugged into my USB 2.0 I get the right:

This is a strange one

Couple of things you may have already tried and may seem overly
simplistic, but may be worth a try.

1. While computer is running:  Unplug the device cable from the USB 2.0 port
   on the computer and reattach it.  Then check it again in the Device Manager.
   If that doesn't work, shut down your computer (turn it completely off).  Then
   unplug the device cable from the USB 2.0 port (leave it disconnected for a
   minute or so) plug it back in and reboot.  Recheck again in Device Manager.
2. Try a different USB cable (a known working cable) of the same length or
   shorter (USB 2.0 compliant cable) and retry.

 

 

 

I think I narrowed it down....

Tried replacing the new USB 2.0 card with my older 2.0 card (the newer one is a ALi M5271 w/firewire).  And It WORKED!! - So I know it's something with the new ALi card.  I went the their website and downloaded a few new driver/.exe files and will give it a shot this afternoon.

downloaded a bunch of XP stuff from the ALi site for my USB 2.0 card - but no luck at all............

I ended up removing the card along with my modem card and installing my old 1394 card and my old USB 2.0 card.... Now EVERYTHING works!!

May have been a bad card.......

This is the ole OHCI is not compatable to UHCI

INTEL and VIA does UHCI and everyone else does OHCI.

The 2 are not compatable. One of the Universal Non Universal features or USB.
