Video corruption- gfx card problem?

Hi people,
I bought an ATI Radeon 9800pro about two years ago. Up until now there haven't been any problems with this, but this morning out of the blue (whilst playing Rome Total War) the screen was suddenly filled with corruption (loads of red, blue and green lines all over the screen in random patterns.) When i quit the game, the mouse had weird vertical black lines underneath it, and the icons on the desktop were strangely transparent and had the same black lines on them. I decided to reinstall the drivers, but this did not solve the problem. I then installed some older drivers (from about a year or so ago), but to no avail. If anything, going back to the older drivers just made things worse, as when I tried to go into my user the screen went black and was then filled with horizontal yellow lines. I've used System Restore to get me back to where I was before, but I'm still suffering from the corruption, although I've turned down the acceleration to make the computer a bit more usable, but games and videos are pretty much unplayable. Its also worth noting that when i load up windows, the first loading screen (with the windows logo) has blue squares all over it.
Does anyone know what the problem could be? Perhaps a Direct X problem? I have a nasty sneaking suspicion that the problem is the card itself, but any advice would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully I won't need to get a new card :(

You said that you reinstalled the drivers.  Download, and install a more current driver from www.ati.com, but before you install it, uninstall the old driver, use a driver cleaner, and than reboot the system.  Now install a current driver that you downloaded to see if this helps.  If not, maybe its the card that needs replacing, not 100 % sure

Sounds like your card has bit the dust.  9800Pros have been known to after 2 years of use.  What you have is called Artifacting.  It's caused when a card got overheated or overclocked and can be the result of permanent damaged if the card was overheated too long. or it can be caused by a component on the card burning out.  Check and see if the fan is still spinning.  What else you can do to see if the card is bad is to try it in another PC or try another card in your PC.

Yeah I'm pretty sure now that its the card itself. Thanks for all the advice!
Hmm...now I have to start looking for a new card. I'm currently thinking about a Nvidia 6600GT, like this one http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/80781 as it seems to be the best AGP card out there for its price. I want a card which is at least as good as, or better than the 9800 pro, but doesnt cost too much (sort of in the £50-100 ($90-180) price range.) Any ideas?

The card you linked is PCI-E.    Click on the Specs. tab and you will see.  But yeah, 6600GT AGP would be the way to go.  A bit of a upgrade plus SM 3.0 and inexpensive too.

AGP version card will work, but if you can hold off, the 7600 GT and GS AGP slot video cards should be released within a few weeks according to some web sites.  If you need right away, than the 6600 GT card is a very good mid level card to have.  Not the best, but for our aging systems, you can play some games pretty well.  I had the Leadtek 6600 GT card for awhile, and it played many of the games at mid level settings.

Hmm...odd, the card has AGP in its name, but the specs say its PCI-E. On the customer reviews it says its an AGP card...so who should I believe? I'm going to assume that its just a mistake in the specs page, as I've already ordered the card. To me it seemed like the best priced option available.

I don't know, the MFG# CGNX-G668TVD on the Culb 3D website shows it to be a PCI-E too.  I would say ebuyer is mistaken.
