99.999% price decrease in RAM (99.998828125 rounded off)

My first computer in 1996 came with 8 MB RAM standard, and I paid $400 for an extra 4 MB.

Today I saw $60 for 512 MB (of faster RAM) at TigerDirect.com.

So, laying down $1 gets you 8.53 MB.

8 years ago the $1 gave me 0.01 MB  :smileysad:

That's a heck of a difference.  :smileyhappy:

RAM is still very expensive because you really need lots of it with todays OS's and programs. Now if you could run XP on say 16MB of RAM then I'd say it was cheap.

Ed, that is a good point.  Back then, 8 MB was "good enough".  Now, I'd go with a gigabyte, or more if it wasn't too expensive, so that "requirement" has increased by 125 times.

So, let me amend my figures.  It's only been an effective 99.85% price cut (buying 125 times more RAM).  My first laptop was $4632 .

Looked at another way, at $100 per MB, like 8 years ago for my laptop upgrade, that gigabyte would cost $100,000 :smileyvery-happy:
