In addition to Bay Wolf's advice on connecting speakers, here is some info on adjusting audio volume levels. I have never heard of a problem with the volume of the 1545 model before this, so it could be that a setting is off.
Go to Start>Control Panel>Sound. Open the properties of the Speakers/Headphones and select the Levels tab.
Increase the volume to max. Make sure the balance is in the middle.
Some models also have a "PC Speakers" volume slider. I don't think the 1545 does but if you see it then increase its volume too.
Next open the Enhancements tab. If there is a setting for Loudness Equalization then enable that. If there are any other eq adjustments, increase them all to the max.
In addition to the Sound properties, some models have an additional IDT Control Panel. Unfortunately I don't remember the exact path to it and can't find my notes, but it was something like Start>Control Panel>IDT. It looks similar to this:
If you have a black control panel like that, increase both the master and the speaker levels, then go to the equalization tab and increase those levels.
In addition, some applications/programs have their own volume controls. Mostly they just duplicate the controls of the Sound properties, but it is a good idea to check them anyway -- make sure they are at max.
Sorry I have to be vague and say "some models" etc. I should be able to just tell you which page of your manual you should look at to find all of this information. However this stuff is not in the manuals and I don't know why. There should be pictures of each and every tab with an explanation of its functions, but there is not and never has been. I know because I have been collecting and reading the manuals for 8 years. Dell just leaves it to the owner to figure out and there is not even a help file in the Sound properties to explain anything there.
