CPU diff than original spec?
Hi,
Just bought a lattitude c600 from a friend. the Service Tag says that the original specifications were 1.8Ghz / 533FSB.
Problem is, when I check the BIOS, it reports 750/600???
An ex Dell Tech Support told me that it was probably the SpeedStep (i don't have the original OEM CD's for reinstall) so, doubting I installed the applet. No change.
Is there something missing? Is there a not so obvious 'driver' or software that is needed to unlock this to it's full 'original specs' potential? My friend says that it has never been tampered with.
BIOS is A23. I can pull the processor, if i knew what number = what speed. I think that would solve the whole issue.
Also, if this truly IS a 750/600... How do i know what the max CPU i can install? I can't imagine dell being wrong on the Service Tag lookup. :-)
Thanks in advance to all the guru's.

Thanks Ed!
I must admit I am a little disappointed. Thought I was getting a great deal. Relieved to know that there isn't anything wrong with me or the machine. Da_mn Dell, getting my hopes up. Yes, i put the ST in the site and got the info.
Do you happen to know the max that i can put in the C600? Maybe, i could just buy a 1Ghz and install? Not sure what the limit is or how to figure it out. Want to make it faster if possible, if not that's ok too.
Thanks for your fast reply.

- Well it all depends on what revision of motherboard is in the notebook. The C600 was shipped with 2 motherboard revisions. The first only went to 800 or 850 MHz and with the second revision you could go to 1GHz. But you would need a P3 mobile CPU running at 100MHz bus. They're not easy to find and the 1GHz is expensive. In my opinion I would leave the CPU alone and upgrade the RAM. The max for the C600 is 512 MB and you would need 2 - 256 MB sticks.

Did you get that spec from the Dell support site by entering the service tag?? If you did it is totally wrong. There has been some mess ups at the Dell site. All C600 came with a P3 CPU in the range of 500 MHz (not sure if they went that low) to 1 GHz with a buss speed of 100 MHz.
No driver, No software. You have a C600 with a 750 MHz CPU. When Speed Step kicks in it will drop the speed of the CPU to 600 MHz. You can disable speed step by setting the notebook to the Always On power Option setting. This will make the unit run at 750 all the time.
NOTE: If you disable speed step in the BIOS the notebook will always run at 600 MHz. So leave it enabled in the BIOS.
