Latitude D830 startup stall ???

Why, when we turn on the Latitude D830, is there a white blinking cursor in the upper left of the black screen, but that is as far as it goes in the boot process ?

Then, after turn off and back on, all seems well, except the startup process seems to take much more time than normal in the Dell system boot process ?

D830 is about 4yrs old, and this problem just started a few weeks back.

First suspect on a system that age is a faulty hard drive.  F12 at powerup - run the extended (NOT just the quick) hard drive diagnostics.

    Thanks for the reply.
HD was replaced by Dell a couple months ago.
Ran F12, 'Pre-boot System Assessment Build 4104' (hours) and no problems.
Is that the right test ?
Seems to me there was also another HD test the Dell support guy had us run from a Dell utilities CD, not sure.
