Latitude e6510 - Sound Panel issues/Can't Set defaults or Microphone
Hey all,
I have recently had a few issues with running various sound devices on my Latitude e6510. First off, a basic setup:
IDT audio card/drivers.
NVIDIA NVS 3100M video card.
Intel i5 processor.
Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit.
ePort Docking system (the simpler model, not ePort Plus)
The computer has a built in microphone, but I have a higher quality microphone - a Peavey stand mic that is plugged in through an adapter.
I have been trying for the past few weeks to set this microphone as the default and disable the built-in microphone array, whether its connected through my computer's port or through the port on the dock. Here's the real issue: I seem to be unable to change any settings for which device is the default microphone. If I try changing any of the settings at all, the "apply" and "ok" buttons don't do anything - not even close the window when I click "Ok," or the apply button doesn't de-highlight. I think the only thing that I can change is the ability to raise and lower the levels of the microphone. I can't right click to set defaults, disable any devices, or really anything besides view the properties or change what I see in the window (disabled and disconnected devices).
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for my IDT card, but the only thing that happens is that the "Recording Devices" tab freezes and I have to use the Task Manager to close it, resulting in a Windows Shell Common Dll error. I am therefore unable to effectively update my drivers, unless this previous error is fixed. The only fix for it that I've found did not solve the problem - it involved updating the Chipset Drivers, and honestly I *could have done that wrong or installed things in the wrong order, but I doubt any of it required that much effort.
Another issue is that the IDT control panel doesn't seem to properly work - I can't open the advanced settings window at all.
There are a few other issues with audio, but they are not related and are solely to do with the DisplayPort/HDMI audio, which aren't controlled by IDT drivers anyway.
EDIT: I was able to get sound to go through the microphone through the Line-In port on my computer, but I still want to fix the issues with the sound window, as well as use the microphone through the Dock Port which so far does not seem to be recognized.
Thanks,
John

I am having similar issues, but I don't know that I've defined all the parameters of the problem as well as you have.
64-bit windows on an E6510. My problems are most noticeable when I try to use Cisco Communicator and the IDT audio device disappears. This has caused me to reinstall the audio drivers (latest A17 version) multiple times.
What I see is the IDT audio device disappearing and I'm left with the Default Windows audio device.
I have several different mics and headsets (wired and wireless) that I switch between, as well as a multiple (2) docks.
I'm sure I'm simply getting Windows confused. :)

What I see is the IDT audio device disappearing and I'm left with the Default Windows audio device. The Windows driver just suddenly appears without re-booting or anything? When that happens is the IDT driver folder still on the hard drive? It would be at c:\dell\drivers\R278544. If you were to click the setup.exe file in that folder the IDT driver should re-install, or if you re-boot Windows should automatically re-install the IDT driver as long as that folder is still there.
Everyone here reports having a dock. Does the driver problem seem to correlate with dock usage at all?
I'm sure I'm simply getting Windows confused. :) This is one of those mystery problems that make computers aggravating. The driver itself is over a year old and seems to be stable, so I am thinking it is somehow related Windows too.

I suppose that means you have the same model, operating system, docking station, symptoms, external mic etc. Well, looking over the original post again the only thing I see that I can comment on is this:
"I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for my IDT card, but the only thing that happens is that the "Recording Devices" tab freezes and I have to use the Task Manager to close it, resulting in a Windows Shell Common Dll error. I am therefore unable to effectively update my drivers, unless this previous error is fixed."
I'm not not sure if there is anything to update to because the newest IDT audio driver is now a year old. But I think he could have gotten around his problem with updating by uninstalling the IDT driver & deleting the files (or by using Control Panel>Uninstall a program), reboot, and then download and install the newest version, IDT 6.10.0.6292, A17 (R278544).It could have been that his driver files were corrupted.
Also, I believe the BIOS in the E series has a setting for microphone. I don't know what it does but it might be worthwhile to experiment. Speaking of BIOS, I hardly ever recommend updating it because of the potential risks involved, but for this model there have been an unusually large number of fixes from the original BIOS to the newest one, which is just a few months old. If I had an early version I would be tempted to upgrade.
