Please help with USB problem

I have a remote user working with a D600 and a HP OfficeJet v40 connected via USB and it works fine.

We recently purchased a PR01X docking station so the user can use an LCD to work. The user has a USB keyboard and mouse, both of which work fine connected to dock.

The problem only seems to occur with the printer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the complete driver pack and software provided by HP several times including while docked.

Windows apparently sees the printer, I can even monitor the printer's LCD display through the software bundle.

If I try to print a test page it will either not print or print a few lines and then error out. Very rarely it will complete the print successfully. If I remove the laptop from the dock and plug the printer directly to the laptop, it will print fine and not error out at all.

here is the hardware info:

DELL Latitude D600 / P M 1.6 GHz 1.0GHz RAM 30GB HD

Dell Docking Station / Model: PR01X

HP OfficeJet v40 / Model: C8413A

Can anyone please tell me what the problem could be?

Did you manage to fix this problem?  I have the same issue, but my laptop is D630 and D/Port.  Prints fine when the PC is not docked.  Also, my printer is a Canon iP6000D connected via USB to the D/Port.

Yes, after an intensely exhaustive search I found that the D series notebooks have a tendency to have the Docking Station connection fail. Unfortunately the connector is directly attached to the notebook’s Motherboard which meant replacing the motherboard. This solution resolved my issues however it may not necessarily fix the problems your having.

Have you tried downloading and installing the latest driver packs for both the printer and the D630?

Can you print using the parallel connection on the dock? (You will have to set the "port" to LPT1)

Have you tried each plug on the Docking Station’s usb hub?

Have you tried uninstalling the print software and drivers and then reinstalling the printer while it is docked?

Does a usb mouse or keyboard work on the dock?

Let me know once you try these potential solutions and I will look into your hardware and see if there are any recalls or known issues that could cause the problem.

    Thanks for the prompt response.

[Yes, I have, but didn't fix the issue]

[My printer doesn't have a parallel port, but different printer (HP Laserjet) works fine.]

At this point we have determined that the printer does not directly cause the issue and most likely it is not the dock either.

Is the dock new; or is this a new problem?

The last few things to try would be to update ALL of your D630’s drivers. Here is a link to the latest drivers for your system:

    http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=LATITUDE%20D630&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

Once you have updated ALL of your system drivers to the latest versions, update Windows and evaluate Windows XP Service Pack 3 and determine if you want to install it.

Although you can never be certain until you make a change, if these steps fail, I am 90% sure that replacing the Motherboard will resolve the issue.

Please bear in mind though that this is just my best guess and I may be wrong. Without physically seeing the system however I must say that the replacing the MOBO is your best shot.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks again Karen for the prompt and thorough response.

Since I wasn't able to resolve this issue by "googling it", I finally called Dell's Tech Support.  First thing they had me do was delete the docked profile and redock, but this didn't help.  The next thing they had me do was update to the latest BIOS and drivers, but didn't fix it as well.  So, to answer your question, the BIOS and the drivers are all updated.  As for Windows, it's all up to date except our IT doesn't want SP3 installed yet.

I mentioned this post and Dell is willing replace the motherboard to see if that resolves the problem.  I would normally say let's do it, but what really puzzles me is that the D/Port's USB ports all work on other devices, like the keyboard and mouse.  I think you mentioned this as well.  So, if it is a bad mobo, I would think the USB shouldn't work at all.

I don't think D/Port is new.  The IT guy gave it to me to use at home.  It's been about three years since I received from the IT dept., but I'm not sure how long it's been sitting around before that.  At that time, I had a D800.

Before I agree to replace the mobo, I'll try swapping out the D/Port with the one in my office.  If that doesn't work, I guess replacing the motherboard would be next thing.  If that doens't work either, a fresh reinstall of XP.
