Is it possible to record music, from a tape deck or turntable, through the UBS port? Is there a cable out there with a 1/8 stereo audio plug to a USB male lead?
To connect the device directly, it must be a usb device; these are not common but I have recently seen a usb turntable on the market.
To connect a conventional non-usb turntable will require you to first get a usb soundcard. The most commonly used ones are made by Soundblaster but there are also some others.
If the turntable is a newer one with its own built-in pre-amp, then you just attach its rca (also called phono) plugs to the rca jacks of the soundcard's line-in.
If the turntable is a standard one without a built-in preamp, then you connect it the phono jacks of a stereo receiver, then connect the output of the reciver to the line-in jacks of the soundcard.
There is also a stand-alone usb preamp for turntables that you can use instead of a stereo receiver. You connect the turntable to the usb preamp and the preamp to the usb port without needing a usb soundcard.
Cassette decks are simpler to connect because they don't usually require a preamp. You would just connect the deck's line-out plugs to the line-in jacks of the soundcard.

There are some adapters that are basically usb soundcards that have a line-in but lack a mic jack and other features of a complete soundcard.
